Cultivating generosity

The Role of Giving in Buddhism

Giving, or dāna (Pali), is a traditional practice that cultivates the virtue of generosity and charity. In Buddhism, giving diminishes self-centredness and opens our hearts to the well-being of others through our actions. It has also played a central role in sustaining the activities of the Dharma by providing material and other support to the Buddhist communities which have kept the flame of Buddhism alive for over 2,500 years. With the spread of Buddhism into traditionally non-Buddhist countries, giving plays a greater role than ever if its continuity for future generations is to be safeguarded.
