Dear UK Sangha
For some weeks now I have been in discussions with the Pundarika UK trustees and we have been watching the situation in relation to the spread of the Covid-19 virus which is sweeping the world. The only sure thing about it seems to be its unpredictability.
We are anxious not to do anything which could put your health and lives at risk, as well as those of the wider community. The spread of the virus and subsequent lock-down in Italy has happened so quickly, in just a few days, it’s clear that even if things looked OK the week before the retreat the situation could change any minute and it seems inevitable there will be more major outbreaks in Europe in the coming weeks.
As you know, at our retreats for six days we spend much time gathered closely together in the shrine room so any bugs get shared amongst us, a risk we knowingly take when coming. However, this virus is something different being so very highly infectious, and although unlikely it is possible that someone could come carrying the Covid-19 virus unknowingly, feeling perfectly well. The major outbreak in South Korea started in this way at a religious gathering.
So therefore after praying and taking all factors into consideration, with much sadness we feel the responsible thing for us to do is to cancel this retreat. I therefore suggest if possible you use the time to retreat and practice at home or with a few friends.
Sending love and blessings for your good health and dharma practice.
